Flash is almost dead. I don't even see a reason to install it nowadays.

Same can be said for opera browser.

It is very useful.

Basically it is saying we should install Adobe Flash Player onto our linux distros to watch video with Opera browser.

The problem is Richard Stallman said Adobe Flash is spyware.
Is it possible to watch video without Adobe Flash? For example thru H264 format?

This is my take on the link:

An Opera employee says Opera does not have a H264 licence - which is why we can't watch video on Opera.

So Opera waits for Ubuntu (who has a H264 licence) to upgrade the H264 video format.
Opera can then use Ubuntu's upgrade and people can then watch video on Opera.

There are people who are manually downloading the latest chromium codecs every time video stops working on Opera.
This resolves the problem.

This seems to be the same as point 1 above - except you're not waiting for Opera to wait for Ubuntu to do the upgrade.
You're installing the upgrade from separate licence-holders.

There are people who have written shell scripts in computer code which will automatically download the chromium codecs onto their OS.
The origin of the codecs are not necessarily from a linux distro's repository.

Can someone confirm this interpretation? Someone who has read the long thread on the link provided? Someone who understands they should not provide a link in their answer? Even as a joke?

Because they can not provide h264 support (most videos are encoded in h264 nowadays) due to legal reasons. H264 is a proprietary format and you need a licence to use it in your app, in general.

Yes, but sgunhouse has said on my thread (about the same issue):
' look on your distro's software installer for an appropriate version of the Chromium codecs package - and also recently the widevine content decryption module. If you install both of those, Opera should work'.

So this suggests it's not a licensing issue - instead it's about installing codecs from your distros repository. This seems like a more plausible answer.

Not being able to watch video is a deal breaker.
Is there anyway of getting someone from Opera to explain what is going on?
