After executing
rm -rf .cache/opera .config/opera
I can start it up again but after I close it and restart it the process seems to hang. Only after executing the rm command again will it start again.
I have tried with a
dpkg --purge opera-stable
and then re-installing but the problem persists.
The only thing I see on the console is

$ opera

FYI I found and fixed the issue. Due to some issue with my git client I had removed the gnome-keyring package from my system. Reinstalling this package fixed opera.

Perhaps the deb package should add this as a dependency or issue a warning about the absence of the package?
