I now have the newer version but lost all bookmarks associated with the previous version. As a general rule, personal settings and files are not affected by program updates. I can't explain this and it never happened before. But it appears Opera, under certain unknown circumstances, does not subscribe to the general rule. Is there a way to recover my personal settings and files?

Download and launch Opera's installer again, click "options", set "install path" to "D:\Program Files\Opera", set "install for" to "all users", check "Make Opera Default Browser", uncheck "import bookmarks from default browser" and install.

That will cause Opera to again use "Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable" on your root drive as your Opera profile. That way, at least you know Opera is set up right.

Then, if there's nothing that you want in the "Operaoff" folder, just delete it. There shouldn't be anything in there that you want unless it was a standalone installation with a "profile" folder in it.

If you are seeing both launcher.exe and opera.exe at the same folder then it probably means that your installation is broken or that that opera.exe is an old executable file for old Opera Presto, what would explain you getting that page.

Such scenario could also explain your bookmarks and settings being lost to you, since they were from an old Opera.

My intent was to manually upgrade to the newest version of Opera (without deleting my bookmarks). But regretfully, I can't reconstruct a detailed account of what I actually did. I'm now using Opera Stable for Windows 10 (64bit) Version 51.0.2830.55. The missing bookmarks, if recoverable, fine; but if not, I'll just start a new collection.

As far as I can tell, my Opera files include no problematic anomalies. But curiously, and for reasons unknown (to me), I have two application files in the same directory, i.e., D:\Program Files. One of these, "launcher.exe" (1226 KB) works normally (except for the bookmarks recently deleted by accident). But the other file, "opera.exe" (918 KB) takes me to: https://www.opera.com/client/welcome-old.

That is, did you manually install it, did it automatically update, etc? If a manual install was done, but not made into the same path structure as before, Opera may not have been able to discover the previous version's default user-data folder. If you use file explorer to "search" the drive for opera_autoupdate.log or adblocker_rules.json, do you find more than one entry?
