The only way I can get bookmarks to show/open is as a tab/webpage in a browser window which is slow, cumbersome and totally unacceptable. Google has been no help.

I'd also like to move the tab bar from the top of the browser to just above the web pages. Maybe there's some addon that can adjust the look? If there is I can't find one.

as for moving the tab bar: do you mean you want the tabs to be under the adress bar?
i don't know any extension that does that. Maybe someone can write some code for that..

In its Options, set it optimally for yourself. There will be a button to hide/see your bookmarks on the left side. Editing and Filing are easily done; Bookmarks can close or remain as is at next Startup; and more. I have ~ 700 bookmarks, that I can easily access, edit and file as I wish.
NOTE: These are located in Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable
Bookmarks
Bookmarks.bak
BookmarksExtras
These 3 files being very important to me, are regularly re-backed up! Bookmarks can be imported from any other location accessible.
If you have an Opera Account and Sync Bookmarks, even if you have only 1 device, if you ever have to reinstall Opera, or install Opera on a new device, once you sign into your Opera Account, in short order your bookmarks and other synced items, will be reloaded.
