<![CDATA[Cannot install Opera on Xubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver.]]>I tried to use Gdebi, then command line dpkg, then Software Installer (really bad in 18.04), total failure to install.
Gdebi posted an error message:

Same Version is available in a software channel
You are recommended to install the software from the channel instead.

Opera has the best print utility of all and built-in VPN and that is why it is my go-to browser. The latest upgrade in 18.04 killed Opera however, and I cannot reinstall Opera.

Just download latest Opera.deb and double klick on it, like a Setup.exe on Windows.

  • the first one would install the old presto opera
  • the second one would install the stable version of the new, chromium-based opera
  • and the third would pop an error that there is not package with that name.

Second, download the deb package from here
https://www.opera.com/download/get/?partner=www&opsys=Linux

and install it with dpkg -i like so
dpkg -i opera-stable_somenumbershere_amd64.deb

If dpkg complains about missing dependecies, install them with
sudo apt-get install -f

If it still complains about libcurl4, blame the distro's maintainers that decided to have libcurl4 by default on a so-called lts version of the distro.

I cannot find the Opera repository. I tried

sudo aptitude install opera
sudo aptitude install opera-stable
sudo aptitude install opera-browser

but could not discover any repository.

The Opera website offers no help at all beyond downloading the .deb file for installation.

Gdebi does not post an error message, it simply crashes.
On closer examination, Gdebi says four packages must be uninstalled and libcurl3 installed. I manually removed the offending four and installed libcurl3, but Gdebi still crashes instead of installing Opera stable.
