There is currently no standard for this and we have users with enormous numbers of emails and the attachments in their boxes. While I appreciate that some people may be able to handle, and have a need, for over 5000 emails (many unread) we need to find a place other than the mail server for them.

the question is - can Opera mail move emails from the server to a user selectable local archive?

On POP mails, Opera expects to keep copies even after they are removed from the server, so there would be nothing new here. For IMAP Opera would need to be set to download and keep local copies of the messages (which would take a little time for 5000 messages) and then would require the user to actually move them to a different account so that they won't disappear when removed from the server.
