The update/windows detected an issue (corruption and or access) with your account, so it created a new one so you can still access your computer. Obviously the old user account wasn't that bad as you were still using it, but something was up with it. Windows can do that on its own without an update too.

Wouldn't hurt to check your drive and chkdsk /r in an administrator command prompt (and restart) for good measure.

Every time I think I'm aware of the ways Windows 10 updates can cause problems on a system, I discover yet another way. Yours is the first report I've seen where Windows has spontaneously created a new user account similarly-named to the original one. Perhaps this will aid in my helping somebody down the road who runs into something similar. Thanks again! 👍🏽

Well actually I still had one account named Peter. But in that account I had lost my mail history and in Opera my bookmarks. Under Users I saw that there where 2 users, Peter (my old account) and Peter.Peter-pc (the new user).
All the files in Peter had the old settings, the new user peter.peter-pc had all the new (stripped) settings. So I copied some files from old to new and it all worked again. Files in the new user are updated now where the old files in "Peter" stay as they were. So in time I think I can delete that user.
Ik now make regular back-ups, just in case.
Oh , and no, I was not asked if I wanted to create a new user account.

Just for informational clarity and possible future reference regarding the Win10 update issue, did the update actually create a new, second user account without asking, such that you ended up with 2 user accounts? Did/do both accounts fully function (other than perhaps some application programs like Opera not working in the new account)?
