Yep, if it would for disabling search suggestions, but what you are facing is another thing.

I would try a reinstall with a clean profile folder.

Try disabling 'Use a prediction service...' (or something like that) in Opera's settings.

Although it looks more like a display issue.

When you're in example in Facebook and you click the address bar to go somewhere some humongous box appears which obviously has speed dial links in it. How do I disable that?

I don't see it here. I remember something like that in a old version of Opera but as far as I know it was removed since a while.

Scroll to "Sidebar" and click manage sidebar. Uncheck Speed-dial. That should stop it from making pop-ups. Unfortunately, there is no way to disable it for certain websites without 3rd party add-ons.
