<![CDATA[Opera 45: Weird messenger permissions]]>Hello everybody!

I've been upgraded to the new versions of Opera, which offers some messenger integration. However, I've ran into problems.

  1. I have nothing against the sidebar being on the home screen. However, I don't use it in browser window. Have never used, and am not going to. So why does pinning the sidebar is required to use messengers? As in, not pinned - no messengers. Would've been at least bearable if it could be automatically hidden and then called when moving the mouse to the screen edge. However, no such setting. I don't want the sidebar in my browser window. Which now means, no new features.

  2. Why do all three messenger required access to mic & cam? Even Telegram, which, afaik, doesn't even have voice/video functionality. I've used all three as standalone web apps from their creators, and they didn't require no permissions by default. So why does Opera's built-in messengers do? And in such a manner that you cannot continue the setup process until you grant access. I'd happily use the texting only feautures of the messagers, no voice/video. Why no choice? Why have a checkbox at all, of there is no choice?

All of this, unfortunately, means that I won't be able to appreciate all the work put into messengers integration. I would love to use it, but you've implemented it in such a way that makes usage impossible for me. Such a shame.

Wasn't there a reason why M2 got removed from Opera Next?

That integration worked perfectly without interfering with your browsing experience.

"Full browser experience" sounds like a bad joke, though. Real people often have much smaller displays than the designer guys and gals. They keep forgetting about it, with their huge screens. At 1280 x 1024 the open side pane overlays 1/3 of my screen. That's not a full browser experience. That's an automatic switch to mobile view on responsive websites and unreadable content on non-responsive in a side-by-side mode.

And if the chat is not always visible, then I see no reason to have anything else in the browser window, including the sidebar that carries the messenger icon. Give me sound notification, and be done with it. I'd keep a separate tab for the messenger. Leave it on the home screen, for example. Together with the sidebar, if it's so important. But off my browser window, please. That's ridiculous.

Such a great idea ruined by execution. 😕

The point of having the messengers on the sidebar is to allow the user to chat without needing to leave the page s/he is on it makes sense that the messenger on the sidebar only works with it pinned.

There have been some requests on it.

Why do all three messenger required access to mic & cam?

There have been some complains on it. I have no idea why those accesses are required.
