A new browser is already available: Opera 20+.

Also try accessing the opera:plugins page and disable the ones you don't use.

I've had to modify a few clients laptops before, that were showing such symptoms because of bad design and poor power management, and were way out of warranty.

It's wouldn't happen to be a HP (Hewlett Packard), would it ?.
