Do you think it's worth emailing the opera devs aout it?

Well, Opera doesn't offer any kind of individual support and/or contact.

You can request it on Suggestions Box or on the Desktop Team Blog but you have to show them why do you think it should be implemented and how it would be helpful for the users.

Extensions can have their icons turned off.
