As a result, streaming video/audio on many sites don't work. The video frame says something like "The media cannot be played" and becomes blank. These include Mixcloud, SoundCloud, Twitter videos, etc (Youtube videos work OK).

In is possible to fix the problem by reverting the ffmpeg package version to 53.X. First, remove the latest package:

sudo apt-get remove chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

Then, download the 53.X version from the Launchpad. For example, I'm on AMD64, so I downloaded the previous version of the codecs built for AMD64 from here

Then install it manually via dpkg:

$ sudo dpkg --install chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_53.0.2785.143-0ubuntu0.16.04.1.1257_amd64.deb

Optionally, put the package on hold until it gets fixed:

$ sudo apt-mark hold chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

After that, everything should work OK.

Yes, I was just baffled because all was fine some days ago. Needed to turn off the Opera ad blocking and uBlock.
Additionally set uMatrix to allow the script 'imask.googleapis.com'
Too many ad-blockers can be a grind but they are certainly worth a bit of fiddling.
Thanks.

I am unable to play any of the videos. (Scroll down to see a selection of videos).
Same with Vivaldi and Google Chrome.
Kubuntu 14.04. Have yet to try my CentOS 7.3 and Xubuntu 16.04.

(Just in case I changed the path as per link provided by adasiko - no change).
