This happened with my previous web client too (Thunderbird).
How can I be sure that an email message has been actually sent with Opera mail?

I've no idea if some such thing there is in Opera Mail though.

In Opera Mail, look at the list of access points - you'll see one called "Outbox". If the Outbox is highlighted and has a number next to it, the message has not been sent yet. If it hasn't, then click on the "Check/Send" button. But as far as what happens after that - you have no way of knowing what happens after it leaves the Outbox.

There's sent and there's delivered. If a message has been processed as sent, it might have been actually sent -- OR it was a bug. This is first.
If a message has been sent but not delivered - it's second.
