Today we released the first beta Opera Mini version 20. In this version, we focused on Downloads.

In the new Downloads UI, you can see ongoing download speed and more options available for each download item. We have supported background downloading now in this version. Once you start a download in Opera Mini, it will complete in background even after closing Opera Mini.

You might also notice that we have extended the address bar suggestions. Copy link and your search history suggestions are available besides the suggested sites.

As always, thank you for being a part of our beta testing. Let us know what you think of the new build. You can get the Opera Mini for Android beta here: http://opr.as/e1x

What for the downloads must go via Opera's proxy?!! It can't any way boost downloading (bottle-neck is last-mile of client, and any video/audio/installer is ultimately compressed unlike pages).

There are number of reasons for that. The basic one is that many downloads are cookie and IP protected. If you try to access the same URL from your IP without a cookie, on many sites you will simply get "Access forbidden" error.

my gut feeling is that redirects and reloads are in fact a memory issue of the phone. available > ram getting tight with many apps in the background competing, and not enough room for mini to > > expand websites, that are getting fatter and fatter.

Yes, that's memory management of Android. But UC-Browser takes 100M vs 70M of Opera-Mini, still working nice at 460M device (Android 4.4)!
It uses persistent service-threads, what could use Opera's developers, if they really care of real users.

What for the downloads must go via Opera's proxy?!! It can't any way boost downloading (bottle-neck is last-mile of client, and any video/audio/installer is ultimately compressed unlike pages).
Downloader functionality is just using features of TCP in the client, here in Opera-Mini.

Add also the fact that Opera mini downloads past the actual file size.

I left Opera mini to download iTunes 12.5.2, a file not more than 170MB.

Some 40mins later, Opera mini was STILL downloading the file and the size was past the actual download size and creeping towards the 400MB mark. Doesn't take much to know that the file is already corrupted.
Repeated tries and it's the same issue.

Copied the link and pasted into UCMini and it downloaded and the installer opened successfully.

Repasted the same link in Chrome and it also downloaded and opened well.

Repasted in OperaMini and tried again. Downloaded past the size. Decided to leave it, probably it was having connection issues, but hours later the completed download couldn't launch. File corrupted.

Used OperaMini V20 beta from PlayStore

Failed and interrupted downloads happen a bit too often and when they do, most of the time resuming the download doesn’t work. And obviously it has unstable & slow speed downloading problem.

On the other hand, both UC Browser & UC Mini has built in powerful robust download manager. Which handles better file downloading. With better speed & better file management & obviously with download acceleration.

If opera mini developers will improve the opera mini's built in download manager then without any doubt, Opera Mini will be the best of all.
