Today, we’re starting to roll out an upgrade of Opera for Android to our beta channel. We’re doing this gradually, so it might take a little while before you see it on your device.

A brand new UI

The first thing you’ll notice is the UI overhaul. We’ve rebuilt the main browser interface completely, while the settings section has gotten a lick of paint as well.

News in the US and Indonesia

In the US and Indonesia, the start page looks a little different: Speed Dial is still there as a panel on the left, but in the center, there is a news feed powered by a totally overhauled Discover engine. It allows you to read the latest news right when you start the browser, and you can easily dive in and start exploring.

We expect this feature to be rolled out to more countries and languages in the near future as well, so stay tuned for more news.

Under the hood

This release is still based on Chromium 50, but we’re working in the near future on updating the engine as well: that’s why we’re calling this release version 37.1, in case you’re wondering.

We did find the time though to do a number of bug fixes to the “add to home screen” feature (progressive web apps):

view mode media queries are now properly supported

the notification area picks up the theme color from the manifest

there’s a better fallback mechanism to deal with omissions in the manifest metadata

Additionally, intent:// URLs, which can be used to jump from webpages to native apps, are now supported as well. You can try this out by visiting Deezer.com and clicking on the blue button.

Let us know what you think about the release!

The beta version doesn't allow you to save a file to a specified location on the device yet. This is something I very much miss from the official release. I remember that Opera Mobile would prompt for write permission to external sdcard on Android 6. The beta is not concerned with write permissions to external sdcard because it only writes to the internal storage default Downloads folder.

BTW, thanks for the forward button on main toolbar. As mrninko has mentioned in a previous comment, the forward button appears active even when a page has no forward history. That needs to be fixed.

One more thing about button layout. I find that the user button bottom right is OK, but I find it uncomfortable that the tab buttons, offline, bookmarks, history, and downloads, are at the top, since you have to stretch the thumb to the top of the screen to make a selection, while all other typing happens at the bottom of the screen. Please add an option to place these tab buttons at the bottom, or simply place them there.
