Just updated and have 2 immediate issues:

1. I can't find my bookmarks - or any bookmark system.
2. I can't find Speed Dial settings to change the tile size. All my Speed Dial tiles fitted in one page, now the setting is too large to be useful.

Apologies if I'm missing the obvious, but frustrated as I just wanted to browse, not spend hours trying to work out how to use it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Perhaps the shortcuts to Old Opera have been dumped, but you still should be able to open the Old Opera version directly by clicking on the opera.exe file in Old Opera's installation folder to start it... if that works as it should, then simply create a new shortcut to that file to use it thereafter.

Assuming the Old Opera version is still intact, you could export your original bookmarks from it via Menu > File > Import and Export > Export as HTML... > choose a file name and place to save it > Save. Most browsers can import from an html bookmarks file, including the Firefox 26 version I'm using at the moment.

I have been using Opera through all it's versions for a long time now - hence the build up of stored information that my bookmarks represent for me. This is the first update that left me flummoxed how to get it all back.

I appreciate that it will still develop, but to many users it is just a convenient tool, and to find one day that you have to search to find out how to use it again doesn't give confidence.

The update seems to have removed the old version of Opera, so I was left without a functioning version.

Without your help I would have been nowhere, as I couldn't find any of this in the help files. It is now in a usable form.

Is there an easy way to export Opera bookmarks - other browsers don't seem to find them - as this would give more confidence in not losing them?

Thanks again to all for your help and comments.

Also the speeddial page is seeing improvements in the developer version. You can choose up to seven columns, remove the google search bar and adjust the size of the tiles by adjusting the zoom. So yes, they are working on flexibility.

Opera has come a long way in the past few months. If you had seen Opera 15, you would know how much v.18 has improved. The point is, it's too early to say that Opera "no longer wants to offer the flexibility" you need to work the way you want. Give it more time. Keep the old version as well as the new. There won't be any conflicts. That way you can keep an eye on the new browser's development.

Sadly whilst it does give me a bookmarks bar, it doesn't seem to pick up the missing bookmarks.

I am surprised that the developers have decided to do away my collection of bookmarks without warning - I will have to try and retrieve them from Speed Dial and make sure they are all in another browser. I might see if I can uninstall the update and get use the old version in the meantime.

Enable Bookmarks Bar on opera://flags/#quick-access-bar and then on Settings. May not be the best bookmarks system but it's the option for now. Or you can use an extension.

I guess there aren't any.

Well, there is opera://flags/#default-tile-width and opera://flags/#default-tile-height but i don't know if they do what you want.
