There are many others NPAPI plugins which work (VLC Web Plugin, Google Earth, ..).
Why to break most useful one?

Because the support has been dropped gradually. Starting on 37, no npapi plugin will work.

They need to upgrade to the PPAPI standard to work with Opera. NPAPI is 21 years old and full of security issues. Last I checked the only browser that will support NPAPI past 2016 is Internet Explorer. So this is entirely on the extension developers shoulders to fix, not Opera.
