Unfortunately, there is no such option. In spite of Opera's heap of functionality and options.
The editing of a skin's configuration also won't help:
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/ttt-o/guide/32full/a-thumbnailwidgetskin.html (it is possible to scale up thumbnail area but not thumbnail's image itself).

BTW,

Maybe it is possible to replace standard thumbnail image with extension through the Opera'a (Presto) extension API. There are some abilities to work with tabs in extensions API of the real Opera 12.
I don't know if it possible through the opera.dll patch (hack) to scale up thumbnail images. But there are useful opera.dll patches that exist and works:

Patch to disable Tab Stacking function in the Page Bar (Tab Bar). The Tab Stacking still works in "Windows" sidebar panel after patch.
Patch to disable reset of the default search engine in Opera 12.18 ("reset to google" issue inherited from 12.15+)

...so maybe it possible to patch opera.dll in a same way for a thumbnail images.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I am not that capable but if there is anyone who want's to take a crack at it I would pay good money for that.

I am so excited to have the latest update I want to spruce it up as best as I can.
