<![CDATA[Changing default search engine on Opera 20]]>Hello,

I'm trying to make DuckDuckGo a default search engine in Opera 20 and can't find how. I added it other search engines (opera://settings/searchEngines) by rightclicking the https://duckduckgo.com search field and selecting create a search engine. I got a big list of other custom search engines and neither one has an option of "make default".

It's supposedly possible in Chrome:

Two things to mention here:
first yes there is no possible way to remove the default search engines in the shortcut menu... on the UI.
Still there's a json-file in %opera-install-dir%/%your-opera-version%/resources named defaultpartnercontent.json.
Find your location (e.g. "de" for germany) and remove the search engines from there. Than the key is free for use again.
Also I'm pretty sure it was possible earlier and the reason opera removed it because of security reasons is pretty strange. What security reasons should that be?

It's power users who fiddle around, not newBs. And it was power users who went down with Opera for years. Opera is even now, 1.5 years down the chromium road, inferior to what it was with v12 in almost every respect. I still can't use y for youtube, b for my tech board and change the google search link because of some weird security reasons (I truly am sorry, it's no difference changing whatever file if there's no user security barrier, which is down with admin installations anyway - so the reason is horse shit). I can't change my interface, can't write my own adblocker on the fly (which is still way more effective than any other I found, because it uses MY wildcards), can't just open a downloading file instead of saving it first, can't change most settings (look at this 'advanced settings mode' - it's a goddamn joke!)... Go on, open the settings in v12, fiddle around - and then tell me this was where Ol' Grandma cooked her soup.

I use Opera since v6, so for about 13 years. I didn't change from IE5 to Opera for the friendlier icon color. I wanted a tool - fast, configurable and bound to my needs. Much like a fully fledged jet cockpit. And I got it until 1.5 years ago. Opera v15+ was a Fisher Price car, and v26 isn't much better. I'm pretty sure that's why about 50% of the opera users still use v11 and v12 while the newbies download the newest (and I bet those 50% are the power users who stuck to Opera for ages). I will install v12 again for my new machine, and start looking around for an alternative, since some websites already break with the old version. If v30 doesn't bring back CORE features of Opera v12 I'm gone.

Funny side note: Opera 26 isn't even able to work properly with this text box. Now THAT's progress, I'm truly amazed!

I mean why would they cut back on useful features that was in previous versions? Simply make the process a little more difficult if its a security issue. I don't see how setting my default search engines could be a security issues though.

BTW, even if it has a few better features now (and I'm not going to speak to that), I think people would generally be better off with Opera (which is constantly in the process of being upgraded), or one of the other major browsers (where the same can be said).

(I mean how cool was that: i type "ende house" and the code "ende" leads me to pons.eu and looks for translation from english to german for the word "house", or "y iron maiden" and it searches youtube for iron maiden songs, as long as that isn't possible in opera 20+ what should I do with that mid-age browser??)

You can also remove the default Google field on the Speed Dial page, or simply not use that field.
