Opera mail duplicates

I have recently added my wife's name as a second Opera account, so that outgoing messages may appear to come from her rather than myself if desired; similarly for incoming. Both names are aliases on one account as far as my ISP is concerned.
We can now have my wife's name in the "From" block when sending a message -- but Opera proceeded to make duplicates of ALL my existing messages in the Inbox, mailing lists, etc., and subsequently make a copy of every new incoming message, usually after a lengthy pause. These are exact duplicates: they do not come addressed to my wife.
I eventually managed to delete all of them, and to keep up with fresh ones -- but how do I cure this plague without causing even more trouble? Help would be greatly appreciated.
Details: Opera mail 1.0, Build 1040, Platform Win32, System Windows 7.
In the Manage Accounts/Edit boxes, the settings for both these accounts are identical apart from our names. -
