Main reason I avoided using new Opera Mail was because it lacked option to minimize to tray, yes it had

Ctrl+Shift+Alt+H and it would minimize it, but that was really pain in the ass to hit every time.

Also if you click close it would exit completely and you would not figure or get notified when you have a new mail.

Reading what other people said I figured Opera Mail is basically Opera 12.16 with browser options disabled.

So I thought developers probably did not had time to implement all menu options for standalone Opera client, but if those are still there, then there must be a way to enable them.

Old Opera had option
Preference > Advanced > Browsing -> Confirm Exit
then when you exit it would ask what to do it, you could pick "Hide to tray" and check to remember and not ask again option

That option would write following option:
Show Exit Dialog=2
into [User Prefs] section of the
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera\operaprefs.ini

So I just added that option to a
[User Prefs] section of the Opera Mail preferences ini file.
C:\Users\Korisnik\AppData\Roaming\Opera Mail\Opera Mail\operaprefs.ini

That was it. Now close button of the Opera Mail minimize it to tray and when the new message come it changes its icon as usual.

We would be really happy if Opera team can bring back this option to standalone Opera Client in the next version.

p.s.
To complete steps you can put back Opera Mail shortcut to the Startup section of the Windows.
Then while there right click on the shortcut and in the Run section set it to Minimized.

I also tried to Operafy Firefox but that failed miserably. I am now trying Chrome parallel with old Opera. I tried Maxthon and some other suite but both were much behind Opera in Mail/Browser integration. Somehow things were not smooth.

In browser I mostly miss Progress Bar popup at bottom. I could easily tell where is the problem with my site or internet connection just looking on the stuff loading. I also preferred Opera Developer Tools (instead of Chrome and Firebug). Rest of the stuff I use have extensions covered.

In Chrome I hate Download popup bar. I would really prefer tab with list of downloads.

Anyway back on topic Opera mail client setup to stay in Tray is quite similar to what I am used on. Different is only Mail button location, and fast switching between links in email.

It's also a little resource heavy for what it is.

Postbox is built from Thunderbird and imo has a much nicer(more Opera like) layout but it isn't free and has limited plugins available.

Since I now use Firefox, SimpleMail was a perfect option. I could make it a pinned tab that would always be there when I started the browser with sessions, just like in old Opera BUT, it corrupted some stored emails and proved to be just too buggy. Too bad to because I really do prefer having my mail client as part of the browser.

So, Opera mail it is. I just wish they would show it some attention but all works well.......for now

Thanks for the tip. This is the only thing I still use from Opera. I wouldn't hold my breath on them doing anything though as this hasn't been updated since they ripped it out from Presto. You'll notice the skin zip is actually the one from the browser too which means it has lots of unused elements. Very lazy on their part

Well I guess it is possible, but this program as it is will be good to go for next couple of years.

When I decided to remove old Opera I tried following things:

Foxmail:
It is really nice, but I did not managed to import messages successfully to it and I have quite lot of those back from 2005.

Thunderbird:
Imported all of the messages, but needed bunch of addons for some things I was used on Opera.
However, most annoying thing is that I could not get used on the interface. Old Opera mail interface was
much more elegant and refined. It was it, same layout, but everything was so strange. Probably if used enough I would get used on it.

ClawsMail:
Windows version interface sucked very much.
