Had thought that Opera had discontinued Opera mail, however am able to send email using my Opera mail with my browser. What did i miss? TIA

Opera Mail, the e-mail client, wasn't discontinued (yet). What Opera had discontinued was the webmail service related to My Opera.

They gave us five months of notice. You need to take some responsibility rather than blame Opera.

If you logged in within the last 6-12 months or so, you should have received an e-mail as well.
