I too used it in the browser and after Presto was killed tried many other things including Thunderbird. There is a plugin for Firefox(the browser I've moved to) called SimpleMail that can be a pinned tab just like in Presto Opera but it has corrupted emails for me so I would approach with caution. Postbox is a better version of Thunderbird which it is built off of but has a more comfortable layout, it isn't free though

You just need to hit alt + tab when clicking on a link in an email if you're not ready to have the Opera browser window focused yet.

Preferred by Opera ASA or the universe of eMail-client program users themselves? There may (or may not) be a difference. If you mean Opera ASA, the answer would be Opera Mail; if you mean the latter, mileage will vary depending on the user's habits and preferences. I personally use PocoMail (though it's no longer available). There are currently Thunderbird, Pegasus, The Bat, Zimbra, Outlook and a host of others (both free and paid) whose users will argue for and against. A good listing and comparison tables exist at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_email_clients
