You mean someone who dont even know what browser does he have? This type of users definitely dont have Opera so... point? Dont know about any BFU user with Opera. Only BFUs with Opera was users that had that browser from powerusers who installed it to them. But most poweruser I know dont recoment Opera anymore cause they just say use IE or Chrome it better. Ive uninstall Opera from all BFUs PCs and tell them the same.

Opera is based on Chrome. Honestly though, based on your post, its not much of a surprise. You're are bumping a post that is 11 months old, complaining about how you couldn't figure out the Konami Code, can't figure out how to hide the search bar and don't even know that Chrome and Opera share a renderer. Firefox sounds perfect for you. Glad you registered here just to post that rant too btw.

I could probably get it to work if i spend a little more time looking but imo as a first impression opera failed due to this very single obstacle.
I've downloaded it because firefox has trouble with some webpages for me but as soon as they provide a fix i'm going to haul my ass back to mozilla because this is just overcomplicated and ridiculous.

Just to point out, the link you put in your May 5th post above references "Remove Google search bar from speed dial", a discussion now closed. In that discussion, alreadybanned gave instructions in his April 11 post as to how to enable Power User Mode while on the Settings page. Those instructions were in error. Rather than repeat them, I'll quote the correct instructions, below:

"...using your arrow keys -- up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, then the letters "b" and "a" Be sure to type type the small "b" and small "a"at the end."

I thought this should be pointed out, just for clarity. (I would have put it in the other discussion, but of course, that one is closed, so I couldn't.)

See also, this link (also mentioned above) which gives the same instructions with a bit more detail:

Of course, something in settings would be better for the user. Maybe the financial arrangement with Google (and clearly, Opera needs revenue to develop a free browser) is linked on the hiding of the Google Search bar being not that simple to accomplish.
Here's a more detailed explanation, if you're still having trouble. Maybe you did something wrong.
You have to enter what's called, Power User Mode. Here's a link on it that explains:
http://newsblog.wti.com/index.php/2013/11/opera-19-developer-update-how-to-enable-operas-power-user-mode/
One thing not mentioned in the link, though. When you go to the settings page click an empty space first in that small Settings rectangle, to get yourself outside of the search box (if you're in the search box with the mouse, it will mess things up). Then follow the instructions at the link, which discuss doing: using your arrow keys -- up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, then the letters "b" and "a"
Be sure to type type the small "b" and small "a"at the end. When you get the Welcome Box, click "proceed"
Then you go down the menus. Scroll about half way down to the section on the Start Page, and put a check in hiding the search bar.
That should do it!
