Is this the norm? Why does it need to call home before I configure it to "my" specs. What is it calling home for? Chrome is working just fine and never reaches out on its own so I'm curious as to why opera is playing by different rules.

Where does it say the info is used to identify you? Where does it say Opera sells that data for example? ...

If you don't want to have data compression, Opera for Android with Turbo disabled is the right product not Mini.

The 1st windows is gone so quick I could only see the word "Opera". The 2nd window stated "Unable to connect to the internet". So I thought Opera was trying to connect (call home) to Opera servers.

I finally got Opera mini to load slow enough to see what the 1st window was actually saying: "Welcome to opera mini". I looked and found some info on what was happening. The 1st time you use mini it checks to see if your connection works properly, so it was trying to connect on its own.

Then I found info stating that due to Opera mini using compression through its servers to speed up the browser, it will always channel your prowser through Opera, no other options. So I uninstalled it since I don't have an option to not use the commpression.

It's part of the installation process.

AFAIK what it does at this point is downloading the list of search engines and Speed Dials based on your location (so that Chinese users get Baidu, other country X gets Google, user on carrier Y gets Yahoo because of a Z partnership between them, etc). I'm not sure what else.
