I "fixed" it based on @zibi1981 suggestion above, as follows:

opera --ozone-platform=x11

From my crude understanding, it would again point to wayland vs x11 issue, but anyway, just sharing in case someone else ends up here after seeing opera crash on startup in Ubuntu.

On firefox and chromium, the buttons work. But on opera, a general prohibition sign pops up. I've tried extensions, but I guess they don't work or I haven't found the right one. My opera version is 95.0.4635.46.
