Hi all,

If you’ve been following our beta channel, you’ve probably seen that we’ve given Opera for Android a serious lick of paint: the browser has a new look that’s fresh, modern, and inspired by Android’s material design.

We’re happy to start rolling out this new UI and feature set to the stable Opera for Android channel as well. This will happen gradually, so it may take a quite a while before you see it on your phone or tablet. If you really can't wait, check out the beta channel in the meantime.

Here’s a quick list of what’s new:

  • The start page has a new design, with Speed Dial on the left, and a news feed with channels you can configure on the right.
  • A “Reader mode” for news articles, which can be toggled per article or set permanently in the Settings.
  • A personal corner in the browser (tap on the “person” icon in the bottom right) where you can find your offline pages, bookmarks, history and downloads. You can also sign in here to sync your Speed Dial, bookmarks, tabs and typed history across your devices.
  • A three-dots menu in the top right with Data Savings, Find in Page, Share, and a brand-new “Add to” submenu.
  • Reorganized Settings: we’ve arranged things in a more logical order, and there’s a dedicated “News” section to fine-tune how your start page should look, whether you want notifications, etc.
  • A “Full screen” option that hides the bottom toolbar when scrolling the page.
  • A “Copy and search” widget that allows you to perform a quick search whenever you copy something in other apps.
  • You can set another search engine as your default.
  • Improved support for progressive web apps, including a number of bug fixes.

What we’re currently working on:

  • A layout switcher for those who want to use the tablet UI on a phone.
  • An option to change news feed language.
  • A way to let you select a folder of choice for downloads.
  • An engine upgrade to the latest Chromium.

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks!

When I scroll down to the bottom, it says version 37 updated on June 15.-)

You mean 37 beta?

No, it doesn't say beta. I don't have a beta installed at all. It is just that. The pics and info are for the new version, but the version I end up downloading and see at the bottom is from June 15. Uninstalling doesn't help it either.

I guess this is an Android's menu.

Long pressing the + button could you make the special 3 vertical tab button deprecated on mobile phones using tablet mode.

Furthermore only since the overhaul started of the user interface months ago, Opera Beta has micro stutter when scrolling. Both on my Galaxy Note 2 and Note 10.

The official not a beta has no micro stutter when scrolling. It is annoying so I use Opera Beta to explore new features but I use the official non beta since that has no micro stutter.

I like the new overhaul but sincerely hope it is debug remnants or something like that causing Opera Beta micro stutter even on the simplest sites.

It started with the first overhaul beta release.

This is awful! Why can't I just have my Speed Dial page, not all these 'channels' which I can't remove!? I didn't ask for them! This is just fiddling with the UI for no gain. Put Speed Dial back as it was, or at least let me get rid of ALL the channels on the home page except SD.

Do you plan to return possibility to turn on/off data saving easily (not this way, hidden in settings only)? It was, for me, really useful feature while I often switch between wifi (data saving off) and mobile data (data saving on).

I agree. This is needed for internet hotspots as well as you can't connect to them if you have a VPN on -in this case data savings, which you have to temporarily turn off/on- or when you want to access your mobile data plan and you can't because of Opera's data savings (different IP range). Don't underestimate the usefulness of an easily accessible switch as it was before, please :) Maybe as an additional icon in the lower bar (power off, settings, data savings switch, close)

All in all, the browser is shaping up pretty well, with the nice red colour concept, the more consistent design, translate page, animations and Olaf, gratz! Waiting for more.

The new UI is rather distracting, but by far the biggest issue is the home button. Instead of taking me back to the Speed Dial on my current tab, it takes me to the Speed Dial on Tab 1. I have 90+ tabs, this means I go from Tab 90 to Tab 1 just to use the Speed Dial - and it doesn't close the tab! This makes the Speed Dial useless. It makes the whole reason for using Opera useless.

Please make a change to this. I regret updating the app. The new settings button is so confusing compared to the old one, which was compact and easy to use.

This is so unusable, it's such a bad change.

Why did you move some of the settings from the bottom button to a top overflow button?? The overflow button isn't supposed to be used! The settings button now is huge, expands over the whole screen, and yet has less information in it. I USE Opera because I can access what I need to from the bottom of the screen. Now you've split the bottom button into TWO buttons, and put all the important things at the top! What's the point of this?! Do you just want me to use Chrome? I don't want this kind of UI, that's why I use Opera.

The logic behind this decision is mind-numbing. I'd love for someone to explain it to me - why split the button in half and then make it very messy? I want the search option on the bottom right button, create a new UI option if you have to.

                        Sorry for 1 star rating,

"Microstutter when scrolling. Samsung phone and tablet 1.6 Ghz 4 CPU cores 2 Gigabytes RAM. Do not update unless you enjoy sadist yourself. Old version was 5 stars!"

                        I will change it into

"Microstutter is being investigated" Then I will give it 4 stars again. Then I will uninstall it and reinstall previous version.

I off course tried clean install.

Thanks @personal1985. Trust us it's important for us that the browsing experience should be smooth for our users.

Everyone else that are asking about the data savings button and home tab logic, both of these issues are under review and we are looking at improving the user experience in both of these cases.

It's great to see big passion you have about the product, and we thank you for being with us during this new stage of the product!

                          I hate the new update, the default font and icon size is way to small for my tablet. Plus since I am visually impaired I literally am getting a headache from trying to write this ;_; ;_; ;_;

Please add a way to adjust the size thanks.

Opera changed the user interface a lot, I like it but remember I did get used to it with the Beta version slowly.

As said I put back the old version from a backup because of the micro stutter.

I tested Google Chrome with Engine 55 and it is not the Chromium Engine 54 causing micro stutter.

Micro stutter is for example very visible when playing some games on a desktop PC which has multiple video cards.

Tested on: Samsung N8000 Samsung N7100

Remember it's not the hardware or engine. It's very noticeable even on the smallest websites.

But I like the new UI and when the Beta is working like butter fluently I will wait and try again.

Perhaps will work if Opera Browser can be the default app triggering Assist API. Related info http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/10/android-6-0-marshmallow-thoroughly-reviewed/?amp=1

Opera 42.0 still issues mobile websites on some sites while the user agent is in desktop mode, while other browsers show the full site for the same website. This bug occurs since opera 41.0.

E.g flyertalk.com, flightaware.com. In 2017 this is not needed anymore as modern tablets and smartphones work normally with full sites, particularly when they are responsive. Mobile sites are sooo 2003 as these are limited WAP sites.

Can there be an option that the user sets the user agent by a self-defined string to avoid those WAP sites ?

I'm really disappointed with the direction of this new UI. There used to be an additional layout that has been removed in this latest version. It was much easier to use on a mobile one handed. The current ui is not very good at all for one handed use.

Another issue is the speed dial. As many others have said, it doesnt make sense to not have this as the default page on a new tab. I want to be able to open a tab wherever I wantand launch a speed dial item. Now the oy option is for the tab to appear next to the horrid fixed speed dial front tab.

And why so many glitches, freezes and crashes? On multiple sites! I shall return to Firefox until you guys quit the BS and get back to making a decent browser

Efficient tab switching, eh? http://imgur.com/FM2qQAM Well, that's quite dreadful. The old version was less cluttered and had exactly the same functionality. Move hamburger menu to the three dots menu, move home page to new tab page, make "add to" a submenu and bam, it's already way more usable. [sarcasm]Here's a quick mock up of that: http://imgur.com/x5nUh8t[/sarcasm]

Any plans to make the latest realease version available on ftp server? That would be fantastic!

I did not see this thread, so I opened a new one. But honestly, this new UI is a complete disaster. While I was actually very satisfied with Opera for Android, with the new interface I have spent the whole day yesterday trying new browsers:

                                                  1) It keeps a useless non-private tab open at all times, which can't be closed and is mostly useless.

                                                  2) When opening a new tab, instead of seeing options for opening items from History and Bookmarks, the only thing available is the addressbar. If I want to see something more, I need to switch to that first tab.

                                                  3) The addressbar, which in the old version displayed suggestions based on what you typed, now only displays suggestions it wants. For example, if I had the website "example.com" in my bookmarks, after typing "ex" I could click on the "example.com" suggestion. Now, the suggestions totally ignores what the user types.

                                                  4) There are two toolbars now, which waste more space, which is precious in a mobile, while not providing any more features.

                                                  5) If I scroll down and the page goes fullscreen, many times I'm unable to get out of fullscreen, so I cannot switch tabs because the button is hidden.

                                                  6) Sync used to work nice, now I just can't trust it anymore. Sometimes I can see the history and open tabs from other devices, sometimes nothing appears.

                                                  7) Turbo can now be disabled only by going through the settings dialog.

                                                  8) The old interface was overall organized. In the new, finding anything is hard and frustrating.

The best suggestion I can give is to totally ditch the new interface and come back to the old one. This situation is totally different from there was the switch from Presto, because we know how hard is to keep a whole rendering engine well maintained. But this new design was really just change for the sake of change!

Please you, don't ignore us users anymore, and maybe create polls in the forums before deciding on major changes! If there are some things that users enjoyed in this latest update (which I honestly doubt), switch back to the old interface and then implement them gradually one by one, but only the ones that you let the users vote before!

I agree. Opera really should have the dignity to abandon the new user interface as a failed experiment, worth a try but ultimately unsuccessful. It has no positive redeeming features at all, only negative.

Please update the old interface and add it back as an option. The new interface wastes screen real estate and the refresh button, my fav feature of android opera, is gone.

Not every app needs to reflect the material design.

@personal1985 Hi, thanks for giving feedback! We will investigate this and see what we can find regarding the stutter issue.

I found an easy way to make Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 and Note 10.1 N8000 or N8010 scroll fluently.

Simple: As long as (in tablet mode) the user interface is visible or either invisible scrolling is perfect. The stutter can be circumvented by an option to always show the Tablet User Interface in tablet mode at the top of the screen. It's very obvious stuttering happens when deciding to scroll in the User interface into the screen. This started with the new user interface.

So a quick solution in tablet mode is always show the top screen menus. My phone and tablet are big enough.

Dirty: I locked my phone on maximum performance 1600 MHz. Yes it works but drains the battery unbelievable fast. No kernel is available to ramp up fast enough the core frequency from 200 MHz to 1400 MHz just to bring in the menu.

Off course I did undo any CPU clocking. It's not the click speed or CPU power but the Opera Team needs to reimplement such a needed CPU spike not happening.

Improved animation like a simple menu scrolling in shouldn't use max CPU since pressing the menu to get bookmarks especially in the beginning stuttered but improved after a few releases later.

Conclusion: Like firefox standard does always shows the tabbar and addressbar I need Opera to give me and others an option to have these bars always visible. Ironically firefox has an option to not always show these bars and then is buggy but no stutter in firefox.

Solvabel: ? Yes, a simple option always show tab bars and adress bar.

I have tested this by scrolling in al directions. Opera wouldn't consume CPU spikes anymore with such a simple solution.

Problem: Tapping a link in Opera will sometimes not advance to the page until clicked multiple times. This happens multiple times daily.

Reproduce: Tap a link while browsing a webpage. There isn't a particular page this happens on consistently. My example shows Google results page.

Results: I expect the link tapped will take me to the page, however it does not. I have to tap it multiple times.

Seems related to what I described as Microstutter in the main Overhaul of Opera Topic.

Opera consists of 2 important parts. The user interface that forwards your messages like finger input like wanting to scroll or to click towards the underlying Render Engine (the actual displayed content)

I have several times urged the Opera team the following:

1 It takes the User Interface time to fully grab user input, this causes on my Note 2 and Note 10.1 microstutter and unexpected bumps in scrolling which I unfortunately do observe on your video too. 2 Underlying Render Engine for the website therefore receives a query full of messages from the User Interface suddenly at once causing micro stutter.

3 The problem is that the overhaul is more in a graphical design phase than an optimal performance state. Meaning even your highly powered device isn't able to deal with the code from the User Interface.

4 The user interface code needs to be entirely rewritten but then fully optimization in code. The overhaul until now meant 'how it looks' not that it's fully functional.

Solvable? Yes. Remember the core render engine is nothing wrong.

How do you get Opera to listen? Data savings not displaying anywhere and option to see it is missing from three-dot menu. Note Pro 12.2 tablet.

Not even worth using Opera if its data use can't be checked!

Could we get a new UI, similar to Chrome for Android? The current one looks really outdated, it's fluid/intuitive and employs a lot of poor design choices. :(

The desktop browser is practically perfect.
