Non-Official Opera browser feature survey

This survey intends to quantify the needs of the users of the Opera browser. The missing features listed below are collected from the Opera desktop blog and forum.

IMPORTANT! This is NOT an official Opera survey. There is no guarantee that the company will take this into account in decision makings.

To keep the results as valid as they can be, please, fill the survey only once! You can save the link of the survey and edit your answers any time. None of your personal informations will be recorded in the results, only the answers you have given.

I would like to make it a live survey, so features can be removed or new ones can be added later. (If you think something is missing, comment in this topic, or message Nekomajin43 on the desktop blog!) I know it won't be a representative result, but it may show the trends and the top most wanted features. You can see the results after you submit your answers.

I would suggest that you do not demand that people have a Google account in order to take the survey. There is no way that I am ever going to get a Google account.

As a person with a disability, that affects my hands and arm movements and makes it difficult to use a mouse, I would like to see some things changed:

      1. Right click on a tab and the menu shows Reload tab

      2. URL field, right click and have Paste & Go in the menu

      3. The ability to remove certain search engines as it is VERY frustrating to click on the crap ones due to muscle spasms - I want to click on the one I want and not one that Opera may want me to use.

      4. The ability to customize the URL bar so I can put the most used extension icons at my fingertips instead of having to add a lot of extra clicks to get to the extension I want.

      5. Get the old fashioned menu bar back as it is easier to use

I used Opera when it first came out years ago and loved it until some of the changes were made - then I uninstalled it and haven't used it for years. I found Firefox to be more customizable so have stuck with them. If Opera brought back the customization I need I would use it as my default browser. Until that point I cannot and you can be fairly sure many people with disabilities feel the same way.

What is the meaning of the option:

      "Both, to allow customization"

Is the way to customize the browser¿?
      Is for non dev users?
      Like OPresto settings edit¿?

It means a native implementation and the possibility to use extensions for the same goal, but with a different approach.

      Arrange tabs
      Warning exit dialog

Would be nice to be added to Opera.
May be add it to the survey? (Don't know if "the edit" it's just for the responses or even for the questions)

Save tabs as SD folder with with time and date

Being that there is no sessions, auto add time and date to the folders name (like History entries).

      https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1870630/save-tabs-as-speeddial-folder-info/p1

Despite preferring Sessions Manager, but until "decide" about that, would be an easy and useful way to keep "session tabs".

Many big features but few small details.

      • Customising shortcuts.
      • Sophisticated download manager (see recent requests).
      • Confirmation on the browser exit (options: off, multiple windows, multiple tabs, always).
      • Comprehensive bookmarks manager, with tagging, descriptions/comments perhaps, various sorting options.

By me. Just recently had an idea of a new feature - a lights out mode. It's like if or when you won't or can't properly use full screen to game or watch a video, nor you're eager to F11 the pane for whatever reason(s) -- then you can toggle this "cinema" mode: everything stays put, just the whole theme and colours go grey or dark grey. Especially - or also - it could be useful at night times, to reduce the overall screen brightness when whatever's going on.

I'd like to say thanks to all the contributors. Let me react all the things from the past 10 days in this comment!

      • There are 79 submissions as of now. I guess it's not bad, considering the time elapsed. But I'd like to have at least a few hundreds, so please share the link with as much people as you can.
      • I've got positive feedback from the developers. No promises, but they keep an eye on it.
      • I've recently added a few new requests and some clarifications. If you've already submitted your answers, please open the link again, and answer the new questions! (If you can't find your suggestions on the list, please note in a comment! It can be because it's too specific or too broad, or it is already included as part of an other request.)
      • As of now, the most wanted features are the following: tab stacking, rearranging extension icons, warning on window close, manual element blocking, click-to-play on HTML5 videos, extension sync, session manager, choose a custom search engine as default and the ability to change the search engine of the speed dial and the toolbar search box. (You can see the details if you open the survey again.)
      • A few of you have noted that you don't create a Google account just to submit your answers. I completely understand your point of views, but for now, I won't make the survey open. I'd like to prevent flooding and data manipulation as much as possible. However, I may open it in the future, when we have much more submissions. (For those who fear personal data collection, the survey does not share your user name, IP or other personal data with me. You can create a Google Form anytime to check it.)

Thank you all again! Let's spread the word!

      Status report

We are closing to 200 answers!

Some features are already being developed. (They will be removed from the list once they reach the stable branch.)

      • bookmarks export
      • expanding the number of recently closed tabs in the tab menu
      • unit converter

The classic lazy loading is new on the list. If you have already submitted your votes, just open the link again, and you can vote for the new additions.

"Sign in to your Google account to fill out this form" - but if I don't have google account, what then?

And RE: "This is NOT an official Opera survey. There is no guarantee that the company will take this into account in decision makings." - do you think Opera devs take any results of official surveys into account?

I answered. But most were not important, some I didn't understand. Something important wasn't there. Like that I could play videos without stuttering: it's not a feature, but it's an inherited Chromium problem; WebKit Midori does not have any stuttering trouble, at all. I mean it's important to me so that I could make Opera my main browser. Because otherwise, it's fast, loads and renders most sites easily... Any minor customisation problems are outshined by that.
So I mean the main (and only as of right now) thing is for the browser to handle all the content WWW can offer. (I mean, well. My computer is a bit aged, but other browsers handle the content in question, right? Opera doesn't. This is the problem.)

And wouldn't make sense in a survey about features.

Since it is not an official survey, what is the point?

The link is not accessible to everyone. When using a VPN, it wants you to create an account, which makes it seem as if you are trying to collect something else (referrals; affiliate programme?). I still would not create an account.

The point of the survey being closed is to prevent flooding and so falsifying the results. But your points are valid, so I guess I will open it. I will update the survey with a few new features later this week. I will post a notification here.

About the survey, I've already got positive feedback from the devs. No promises though.

I'm really pleased with that survey.

Few words for devs :) For me, as a "tabs manager extension" developer, a very important thing would be to hide tabs bar like I can do in Vivaldi and Firefox (in Firefox it's still not possible from Web extension, but it can be done with XUL, like in "Hide Tabbar" extension, but I know they work on it). https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1208596#

Tabs stacking would be a second thing, especially if tabs could have something like parentId, visible via API for extensions, for example to use native grouping, when you switch between various "tabs manager" extensions, all groups could be the same across all of them. That would be sweeeeet. For now chrome API has only openerTabId, which is lost after browser restart.

I would suggest to contact guys from Vivaldi, maybe you can make a compatible cross platform API for tabs stacking? What you think? Maybe contact Mozilla WebExtensions team as well? You know that Firefox folks made sidepanel API based on yours right? I'm working on TreeTabs extension for Opera and Vivaldi, after some small adjustments in css it works great in Firefox as well. Developer's scream: "Unify the Web extensions API" :) And btw. As extra widescreens gain more and more popularity, sidebars finally make sense.

          What do you mean?

I mean that including too much question in a survey may not be a good thing to do.

Too many questions may lead people to abandon the survey. And limiting the survey to the most requested features will give an idea on what are the most wanted among the most wanted.

It's OK, but there are many small features missing, and it is more possible that those will be implemented, than bigger ones like tab stacking.

Anyway, I hope they start implementing them, and I can shorten the list in time. :)

What do you mean by customizing the UI? There is a whole section of UI features.

About the latter, there is a question about native UI.

The option, Both, to allow customization, could be considered the allow customization even in Built in mode, as in Opera Presto?

I don't know if you mean this or using an external extension to complete more options.

Extension may provide alternative solutions to the same problem.

Btw, bookmarks export and tabs menu revamp is under development since the last dev build, so those will be removed from the list. I will post stats and modifications in a few days.
